This is a video teaching students grade 5 music theory topic - intervals. The video is good for beginners to learn grade 5 theory.
1) Coherence principle: people learn better when extra words, pictures and sounds are excluded. All the pictures are only including two music notes (for students to count the interval).
2) Signaling principle: the video highlights the important notes and put it on the top so as to attract students' attention.
3) Multimedia Principle: people learn better from words and pictures rather than word alone. In this video, author always used pictures and words together to explain abstract music theory.
4) Segmenting Principle: Key points are separated in two segments rather than a long paragraph.
5) Personalization Principle: narrations are transcript into words in conversational style.
6) Voice Principle: the video is spoken in a friendly human voice rather than machine voice. In the beginning, the author also showed her face so as to prove that she created this video by her own.
7) Temporal Contiguity Principle – In this video, corresponding words and pictures are presented simultaneously rather than successively.
8) Pre-training: the video taught students all the basic concepts related to intervals.

ReplyDeleteHi Mindy you did a great job analyzing the various principles used.
ReplyDeleteAs I see that you have turned on subtitle in the video, do you think subtitles should be turned on or off for better teaching and learning?
Also could you explain a bit more on the pre-training bit, what kind of basic concepts did the video teach?
Hello Mindy I appreciate that you explained the teaching video detailed, for example telling us your target learner at the beginning. Also your explanation is logical and clear. You did a good job!
