The aim of this video is to tell people what e-learning is and its advantages, although it is an advertisement actually. From my perspective, this learning resource achieves its goals to tell audiences definition and benefits of e-learning with applying following principles.
1. Coherence Principle – There is no extraneous words and unrelated pictures during the whole video. For example, when definite e-learning, only “electronic learning” occurs; when explain e-learning tools with pictures, only related images - audio, video, interactive games and simulations - on the screen.
2. Signaling Principle – Some important informations are highlighted to make audiences learn better.
3. Redundancy Principle – No much texts on screen when explain why e-learning is more cost-saving than traditional class.
4. Spatial Contiguity Principle – E-learning learners can take courses from all around the world 24 hours a day and 24/7. The video-maker put words and pictures closer to help audiences understand better.
5. Temporal Contiguity Principle – When video-maker introduces the features of e-learning, he presents the related pictures simultaneously rather than show them at one time.
6. Segmenting Principle – This video follows the user-paced segments. For example, after video-maker says “ using e-learning in your business …”, a picture of business office is presented. The voice can give audiences a prediction about what image will come out, which can make people learn better.
7. Modality Principle – The video-maker uses lots of images and spoken words rather than written ones to introduce e-learning.
8. Multimedia Principle – Words and pictures are presented together rather than words alone.
9. Voice Principle – This video is spoken in a natural male voice rather than a machine voice.
Hi Weijiao, as you have said this is an advertisement, and a pretty effective one too! The presentation within the video do conform with the principles you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I think the video could do better though is the part on the cost of traditional learning and e-learning. Even though the speaker does say that e-learning costs a fraction of traditional learning, I don't think the video quite supports the speech. Do you think so?
Yes you're right. No specific data and comparison about the cost in traditional learning and online one. Maybe the video-maker can show some chart or table with detailed figures to say why online learning is more cost-saving. Thanks for your comment!
DeleteHello Weijiao, your explanation about principles used in video is logical and clear. I' appreciate that you highlighted important words, which can let me grasp your explanation quickly.
